According to Hindu scriptures, a powerful demon king named Mahabali had conquered the three realms of heaven, Earth, and the netherworld. Though devoted to Lord Vishnu, Mahabali's arrogance and tyranny led him to challenge the authority of Indra, the king of gods, resulting in Indra's dethronement. Fearing Mahabali's might, the gods sought the intervention of Lord Vishnu.
In response, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Vamana and appeared before Mahabali. Vamana, in the guise of a humble Brahmin, requested only three paces of land as alms. Mahabali agreed, but to his astonishment, Vamana expanded to a colossal size. With his first step, Vamana covered the entire Earth, and with his second, he encompassed the heavens. When he inquired where to place his third step, Mahabali, realizing the divine trickery, offered his own head as a resting place. Pleased with Mahabali's unwavering devotion and generosity, Lord Vishnu granted him a boon, allowing him to visit his kingdom once a year, a celebration now known as Onam in Kerala.
