New Delhi: Amid the controversy over historical monuments, the issue of Vande Mataram has now reached the court. A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking that Vande Mataram be accorded equal status to the national anthem. On this, the High Court has sent a notice to the Central Government. The central government has to respond to this notice within six weeks. The next date of hearing has been fixed for November 9, 2022.

The petition has been filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay in the Delhi High Court. Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has said in his petition that Vande Mataram has a major contribution in India's freedom struggle, so it should get the same status as 'Jana Gana Mana'. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Sachin Dutta issued notices to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Law and Justice. The petition said that while both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana are played during prayers in all schools, the court should ensure that.

Social activist Ashwini Upadhyay was also reprimanded by the Delhi High Court. The court said that it appears that the petition has been filed to get publicity. The court expressed displeasure that Upadhyay was making statements on the issue in the media even before the case was listed.
