Varanasi serial blast: 27-man murderer Waliullah convicted

Lucknow: A Ghaziabad court on Saturday convicted the accused Waliullah in the 2006 serial bomb blast case in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. The court will now give a verdict on Waliullah's conviction on June 6. Ghaziabad District and Sessions Judge Jitendra Kumar Sinha, while hearing the case today, found Waliullah guilty. The hearing of the case was completed on May 23. The court had fixed June 4 as the date for pronouncement of the verdict on the conviction.  

On March 7, 2006, bomb blasts took place at Sankatmochan Temple and Cantt railway station in Varanasi. Along with this, a cooker bomb was recovered at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Several people were killed in the bomb blast, while dozens were injured. The case was transferred to Ghaziabad for hearing on the orders of the High Court. On behalf of the prosecution, 53 witnesses were produced in the GRP Cantt blast case, 52 in the Sankat Mochan blast case and 42 in the Dashashwamedh Ghat blast case.  

On April 5, 2006, the UP Police arrested Waliullah, a resident of Phulpur village in Prayagraj district, in connection with the serial blast. With strong evidence, the police claimed that Waliullah was instrumental in plotting the blast at Sankat Mochan Temple and Cantt railway station in Varanasi. The police had also linked Waliullah to the terror outfit. The blasts killed 27 people, while more than 160 were injured. Iin this case, Waliullah alone was arrested.
