By the end of this year, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the Varanasi Municipal Corporation aim to establish a waste-to-electricity facility. That implies that starting in 2022, if you live in Varanasi, the electricity you use at home will be generated by the garbage you throw out every day.

In partnership with NTPC, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation will start generating power from the garbage in the city. The plant would be completed by the end of 2021, according to NTPC and Varanasi Municipal Corporation officials. After Mumbai and Delhi, it is believed to be the world's third-largest garbage-to-electricity plant. The waste-to-electricity plant will generate power from the city's six tonnes of garbage. According to the municipal corporation's and NTPC's plans, three sub-plants will be developed within the city other than the main plant.

According to a senior official from the municipal corporation, an agreement would be reached between the Municipal Corporation and NTPC about waste to energy plants for garbage disposal. 'With MoU, a major chunk of the city's garbage will be disposed of at the NTPC waste-to-electricity plants,' added the officer.

The waste-to-electricity plant will include a receiving shed or pit, a segregation facility, a sealed reactor, an emissions control system, an electrical and C&I system, civil work, and a post-torrefaction handling facility, according to an NTPC official. Officials from NTPC assert that the waste-to-electricity plant would meet pollution standards. The plant shall be odourless and have an aesthetic environment with acceptable noise levels.

'The waste-to-electricity plant being set up at Varanasi will have leachate treatment to prevent discharge of harmful gas. With a fair amount of automation, human exploration will be minimum.
