Karan Johar’s period dramma Kalank has released yesterday and has taken a sensational start at the ticket windows. With the collections of Rs 21.60 crore, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt starrer Kalank has turned out to be the biggest opener of the year beating biggies like Kesari, Gully Boy and Total Dhamaal. The film, which is released in 4000 screens across the country has also become Varun and Alia's biggest openers till date.

Noted film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the box-office collection of the film. He wrote, “Top *Opening Day* biz - 2019...1. #Kalank ₹ 21.60 cr [Wed], 2. #Kesari ₹ 21.06 cr [Thu], 3. #GullyBoy ₹ 19.40 cr [Thu], 4. #TotalDhamaal ₹ 16.50 cr, Note: Hindi films. ₹ 10 cr+ openers included in the list. India biz.#Kalank is the biggest opener of Varun and Alia to date.” Since the film is enjoying a 5-day weekend including a minor holiday of Good Friday, it is expected that it will also turn out to be the highest first weekend grosser of the year. However, Kalank will definitely face a huge screen crunch in the next, post the release of Hollywood's biggest film Avengers: Endgame.
