NEW DELHI: A new textbook for engineering and science students taking a mandated non-credit course on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) will include an introduction to Vedas, Puranas, Sanskrit, ancient science, engineering, astronomy, town planning, and architecture.

The textbook, which will be released by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday, is part of the center's effort to implement a new higher education curriculum that emphasises the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), as recommended by the National Education Policy (NEP).

The new textbook comes after the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) declared in 2018 that an obligatory non-credit course in IKS would be introduced. Although the course was started, there were no "genuine and well-researched" texts available on IKS.

In collaboration with SVYASA Yoga Institute in Bengaluru and Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth in Ernakulam, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore designed the curriculum and wrote the textbook.

B Mahadevan, professor at IIM Bangalore and founding vice-chancellor of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, wrote the textbook 'Introduction to Indian Knowledge System ideas and applications,' which was reviewed by a panel of specialists (University for Sanskrit and Indic Traditions).

The cost of the 417-page English textbook is Rs.795. It is expected to be translated into Hindi soon. According to the author, the book attempts to fill a gap in the availability of an IKS needed course. "The suggested textbook aims to educate engineering and scientific students to the epistemology and ontology of IKS in a way that they can relate to, enjoy, and investigate further."
