New Delhi: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu expressed his condolences on the death of famous Bengali singer Gitashree Sandhya Mukhopadhyay on Wednesday, describing her passing as a "great loss to the world of music."

Naidu took to Twitter to say, "Gitashree Sandhya Mukhopadhyay Ji, a legendary Bengali singer, has passed away. Her passing is a big loss for the music industry. My deepest sympathies go out to the grieving family members. Shanti! Om Shanti!"

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences over the demise of the legendary Bengali singer, saying that her death has left our cultural world a lot poorer and that her melodic renditions will continue to enthral future generations.

"We are all deeply devastated by the death of Gitashree Sandhya Mukhopadhyay Ji. Our cultural world has deteriorated significantly. Her melodic interpretations will continue to enthral future generations. In this difficult time, my thoughts are with her family and admirers. Shanti Om, "The Prime Minister sent out a tweet.

Sandhya Mukherjee, a legendary Bengali vocalist, died on Tuesday evening after suffering a huge heart attack. She had been sick for a few days and was 90 years old. In 2011, Sandhya Mukhopadhyay received the 'Banga Bibhushan,' West Bengal's highest civilian award.
