Veteran Bollywood actress Shammi passes away at 89; film industry expresses grief

Veteran Bollywood actress Shammi Rabadi, whose real name was Nargis, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. Celebrities from Bollywood including actor Amitabh Bachchan, former Member of Parliament Priya Dutt, and designer Sandeep Khosla mourned “Shammi Aunty’s” death.

She was ill for some time before she breathed her last at her home in Juhu Circle. The funeral rites will be performed on Tuesday at around 1 PM at Oshiwara Cemetery. Nargis was a Parsi and wife of Bollywood director late Sultan Ahmed. 

Amitabh Bachchan took to Twitter to express grief. He was saddened with her death, which comes a few days after superstar Sridevi’s demise. 

“Shammi Aunty .. prolific actress, years of contribution to the Industry, dear family friend .. passes away ..!!
A long suffered illness, age ..Sad .. slowly slowly they all go away,” wrote Amitabh Bachchan on Twitter.

Sr. Bachchan and Shammi had acted together in the film ‘Khuda Gawah’ which also starred Sridevi. 

Shammi was famous for her supporting roles of aunty, grandma etc. She also acted in TV serials. Her famous works include, ‘Arth’, ‘The Burning Train’ and Coolie No. 1 among several others.
