Experienced filmmaker Basu Chatterjee, who was identified due to films like 'Chhoti Baat' and 'Rajnigandha', died on Thursday due to age related ailments. He was 93 years old. He breathed his last at his residence in Santa Cruz. Ashok Pandit, President of the Indian Film and Television Directors Association (IFDTA) told 'PTI-Bhasha', "He breathed his last peacefully in his sleep in the morning. He was not doing well for some time due to age related problems and he died at his residence. This is a huge loss for the film industry."

Pandit further said, "The last rites of the filmmaker will be performed at the Santa Cruz Crematorium Ghat". Basu is known for films like 'Us Paar', 'Chitchor', 'Piya ka house', 'Khatta Meetha' and 'Baat Baat Mein' After his recent demise, Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted, 'Sad to hear the news of the death of Veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee. He will always be remembered for his Laidle Horted Comedy and Simple Films.

Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh wrote, 'Basu died. According to me very few people see the lighter side of life like he did. All his films have smiles on their faces. I am a big fan of them, I have 'Kahaani 2' to prove it.' Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid tribute to Basu Chatterjee, writing, 'It is sad to see the passing of great film director and screenwriter Basu Chatterjee. He gave us many good works like 'Chhoti Baat', 'Chitchor', 'Rajnigandha', 'Byomkesh Bakshi', 'Rajni'. My condolences to his family, friends, fans and the entire film fraternity.'
