Shivamogga (Karnataka): HR Keshavamurthy, a renowned Gamaka singer, has been awarded the Padma Shri award.

This art must be promoted by the government. I have been playing the Gamaka for six decades. To pass this on to the next generation, we need funds, he said.

Even now, he is desertions of to teaching and performing live on the stage. Gamaka is a way of telling stories through song. Ex West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, late Punjabi folk singer Gurmeet Bawa,  Bharat Biotech Chairman Krishna Ella and co-founder Suchitra Ella, former Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation Satya Nadella, and CEO of Alphabet Sundar Pichai are among the 128 Padma Awardees.

Keshavamurthy has taught over 1000 aspirants without charging them a dime. Even now, he is curious to educate and perform in front of an audience.

Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri are the three types of Padma Awards.

Art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service are among the disciplines and spheres of activity for which prizes are presented.
