Veteran lyricist & Tamil poet Pulamaipithan passes away at 85

Pulamaipithan, better known as Ramasamy, a popular Tamil lyricist, died on Wednesday morning owing to illness. He died in a private hospital in Chennai after being taken to the intensive care unit owing to age-related illnesses. His admirers and politicians have expressed their sympathies to his family.

On August 28, he was admitted to the city's Fortis Malar hospital and placed on life support. However, his health deteriorated, and at the age of 85, he passed away. His mortal remains will be taken to his hometown of Neelangarai, where they will be kept for public homage.

The veteran lyricist has penned songs for top stars like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan.  He rose to fame in the business after composing the lyrics for MGR's film Kudiyirundha Koyil's song Naan Yaar Nee Yaar. In 2016, he wrote the lyrics for Thalapathy Vijay's song Thaaimai from Theri, which was performed by Jayashri. Pulamaipithan has written around 100 poems, all of which are well-known in Tamil.

Apart from films, Pulamaipithan served as Deputy Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council, by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MG Ramachandran.
