New Delhi: Vice Admiral Bimal Verma has suffered a major setback. His plea was rejected by the Armed Forces Tribunal. Vice Admiral Verma had recently challenged the appointment of Karmbir Singh as the Chief of the Naval Staff. In the petition, Admiral Verma said why he was not made the Chief of the Navy even after being senior. He filed a petition against it in the Armed Forces Tribunal. The first Chief of the Navy was Admiral Sunil Lanba. He retired on 30 May.

After this, Admiral Karmabir Singh was made the next Naval Chief. Let me tell you that this selection has been taken by the Indian government while adopting a merit-based approach. Under this, the tradition of appointing the senior-most officer to the post has not been followed. It is worth noting that the government had not followed the tradition of being the senior-most when appointing an army chief in the year 2016 itself.

During this time several other officers for the Chief of Naval Staff were also involved. These include Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar, FOC in Sea Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar of Western Naval Command and FOC in Sea Vice Admiral Anil Kumar Chawla of Southern Naval Command. There was a lot of controversy about this issue as well. The opposition also targeted the government.
