Odisha: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu expressed his condolences on the death of former Odisha Chief Minister Hemananda Biswal on Friday, saying that he will be remembered for his devotion to the state's development.

We are saddened by the death of Shri Hemananda Biswal, the former Chief Minister of Odisha. He always championed the cause of the people throughout his long political career and will be remembered for his dedication to Odisha's development. "My condolences to his lost family and friends," India's Vice President tweeted.

Biswal, who was 83 years old, died on Friday while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Biswal was the Chief Minister of Odisha on two occasions, from December 7, 1989, to March 5, 1990, and from December 6, 1999, to March 5, 2000.

Hemananda Biswal, Odisha's first tribal chief minister and the state's last Congress chief minister, died on Friday at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following a brief illness. He was 82 years old at the time.

Biswal made his debut in politics as the head of the Kirimira panchayat samiti in the Jharsuguda district. In 1974, he was first elected to the Odisha legislature from the Laikera constituency.
