BUDAPEST: Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban took the oath of office for the fifth time. The 58-year-old cautioned that difficult times lay ahead, recalling that the decade began with the Covid-19 outbreak and ended with the Russia-Ukraine war.

"The conflict, as well as the European sanctions that followed, resulted in an energy crisis. This and the interest rate hikes have brought high inflation, which in turn will bring a recession and an economic decline," he said.

The Hungarian leader came out against the European Union's (EU) sanctions strategy, claiming that penalties had never before achieved their goal.  He also stated that, despite Ukraine's backing for his political opponents, the Hungarian government was determined to assist Ukraine.  He also slammed the European Union, of which Hungary has been a member since 2004.

"Every day, Brussels abuses its power and tries to impose things on us that are detrimental to us," Orban said, referring to his government's many disagreements with the European Commission over the last decade.  "However, in the decade ahead of us, it is in our best interests to remain in the EU," he stated.

Orban was Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002, and then from 2010 to the present. In the April 3 legislative elections, his party alliance garnered 54% of the vote, giving him 135 of the 199 seats in Parliament.
