Vizianagaram: Mosquito-borne diseases or mosquito-borne diseases are diseases caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. Every year around 700 million people all over the world get mosquito-borne disease resulting in more than one million deaths. Common diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are malaria, dengue, West Nile virus, chikungunya, yellow fever, etc.

Since monsoon is the breeding season for mosquitoes, mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria continue to plague people in rural areas of Vizianagaram district. People in rural areas are rushing towards hospitals due to increase in dengue and malaria cases for the last two weeks. At least five to six people are coming to the primary health centers every day with symptoms of fever. Patients who test positive for mosquito-borne diseases experience severe pain, fever and a drop in the level of platelets in the blood, which can be fatal.

Patients with severe symptoms are turning to private hospitals for better treatment and are also worried about the cost of treatment. The cost of dengue or malaria treatment in a private hospital ranges from Rs 30,000-40,000. With these charges, poor families were forced to borrow money for treatment or take loans at high interest rates. Dr M Ramana Rao, Medical Officer, Mondemkhal Health Centre, advised people to consult a doctor immediately if they experience fever and other symptoms.
