Chennai: The water level of Mullaperiyar dam is rising steadily due to heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, which has led to the opening of 9 gates of Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala on Wednesday morning. The water level of the dam, which is more than 100 years old, had come down to 141.85 feet at 7 am. After which the Tamil Nadu authorities decided to open the door. Not all doors were opened simultaneously.

In view of the rising water level in the reservoir on Monday night, 9 doors of Mullaperiyar Dam have been opened to release 12654.09 cusecs of water and then three doors have also been closed after 10 pm. The incident of release of large quantity of water from the dam at night has alarmed the people living on the banks of the Periyar river in the district as water has started entering their houses. The Idukki district administration has asked the people living on the banks of the Periyar river to exercise caution.

Where it is learnt that Mullaperiyar Dam is located in Idukki district of Kerala but is operated by Tamil Nadu. Idukki district administration officials said the third door of Cheruthoni dam was opened on Tuesday morning and will remain open as the water level in Idukki reservoir had reached 2401.36 feet on Wednesday. The Idukki district administration has issued an orange alert in view of the rising water level in Idukki reservoir.
