Tamil Nadu Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramaniam attended the inauguration of a simulation center at Apollo Hospital in Vanagaram on Tuesday. On this occasion, he requested the Central Government to suspend the export of COVID-19 vaccines. He said that only one third of the country's population has been fully vaccinated so far and 115 crore vaccines are still needed to give the shot to all people. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday said exports of surplus COVID-19 vaccines would resume next month under the "Vaccine Maitri" program.

Speaking to reporters, Subramaniam said that the global medical fraternity has welcomed the vaccination program in India, as vaccinating people is the key to the fight against the COVID-19 virus. However, Tamil Nadu has been unable to organize vaccination camps on September 20 and September 21 due to lack of vaccines. Subramaniam also said that the country still needs 115 crore doses to vaccinate everyone. In such a situation, the news of exporting vaccines is not true in any way. On behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, we request Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Health Minister to postpone the idea of exporting the vaccine and set a target to vaccinate all people in the country,” Subramanian said.

On the initiative taken by the Tamil Nadu government to vaccinate people, he said that on September 12 and 19, 45.34 lakh people have been given shots in 60,000 camps across the state. The government needs 12.12 crore vaccines to vaccinate the people in the state. "So far we have vaccinated 4.37 crore people and still need 7.50 crore vaccines," he said.
