The proposed peace talks with the banned HNLC terrorist group in Meghalaya are expected to begin soon. Prestone Tynsong, Meghalaya's deputy chief minister, confirmed this. The peace process with the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) would begin as soon as an intermediary is selected, according to Tynsong.

Prestone Tynsong, the deputy chief minister of Meghalaya, told the media in Shillong on Thursday that the government is working to complete last paperwork so that the peace talks with the HNLC may begin. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma met with Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla in New Delhi on Wednesday and reviewed the proposed peace negotiations with the HNLC in depth.

"I am hoping that we will be ready to go forward with the proposed peace discussions with the HNLC," stated CM Conrad Sangma. "Peace in Meghalaya and the whole Northeast is what I seek."

He stated that the Meghalaya government will make every effort to reach an amicable conclusion to the planned peace process with the HNLC. "I am hoping that we will be able to initiate a peace process with the HNLC in order to achieve absolute peace in Meghalaya," stated Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has previously said on February 8 that it is ready for peace talks and that there are no preconditions.  The HNLC's general secretary, Saikupar Nongtraw, had issued a statement announcing the organization's intention to engage in peace talks.

"After hearing several appeals from elders and social organisations in the previous few days, we (the HNLC) have decided to give peace another opportunity," Nongtraw stated. "At this time, we are willing to talk within the framework of the Indian constitution and without any preconditions," the HNLC head stated.
