New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that West Bengal and Odisha may receive heavy rains by October 20 due to the low-pressure area over north Telangana and strong south-eastern wind blowing from the Bay of Bengal. IMD has instructed fishermen not to go to sea till Tuesday. Due to the impact of low-pressure areas, wind speed in deep-sea areas in the north Bay of Bengal can go up to 60 kmph at a speed of 40-50 kmph by October 19.

The Met department has issued an alert for rising water levels in rivers due to rains, waterlogging in low lying areas and landslides in Darjeeling, Kalimpong districts. The government in Odisha, which is already reeling under heavy rains, has asked district authorities to remain alert to keep a close watch on the situation. Regional Meteorological Centre Deputy Director Sanjeev Bandyopadhyay said the rains could damage the paddy crop in the fields in the state. Paddy crop is ready to be harvested in several districts of the state.

The southern districts of the state including Howrah, Hooghly and East Midnapore have been flooded due to recent heavy rains. Bandyopadhyay said the southern districts of the state including Kolkata are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from Sunday. Rain-related activity in the north Bengal districts will intensify from today. Sources in the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Department official said that intermittent rain has been pouring in parts of Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur since Saturday.
