Weekend Market: Sensex falls 769 pts, Nifty below 16,250

Market Closing: The Week ended  on Friday, equity markets swung back and forth as Russia's invasion of Ukraine intensified, with Russian military attacking and capturing control of Europe's largest nuclear power facility earlier today.

The benchmark BSE Sensex began the day with a 450-point loss and continued to fall to a low of 53,888, a loss of 1,215 points intraday. It did, however, make a modest recovery, closing 769 points, or 1.4 percent, lower at 54,334. The NSE Nifty, on the other hand, plummeted to an intraday low of 16,134 before recovering to finish at 16,243, down 255 points or 1.5 percent.

Maruti Suzuki's stock dropped another 4.7 percent today, dropping more than 10 percent in two days. On the Nifty50 index, the stock was the second worst performer. Other laggards were Titan Company, Hero MotoCorp, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, HUL, Coal India, M&M, Hindalco, JSW Steel, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finance, and Eicher Motors, which all fell between 3 and 5 percent. Dr Reddy's Labs, ITC, Tech M, BPCL, Sun Pharma, Ultratech Cement, and Wipro all gained 1 to 3 percent on the upside.

The BSE MidCap index fell 2.3 percent in the broader market, with individual companies like Vodafone Idea, IRCTC, Jubilant Food, Info Edge, Zee Entertainment, Varun Beverages, and Indian Hotel dropping up to 7 percent.

Only the Nifty IT index, which rose 0.14 percent on the NSE, saw gains. For the second day in a row, the Nifty Auto index was the worst affected, ending the day 3.3 percent lower. The remaining indices all dropped between 1 percent and 3 percent.
