KOLKATTA: The West Bengal government has extended its ban on the production, storage, and sale of gutkha and pan masala products containing tobacco or nicotine for another year. The decision, aimed at safeguarding public health, will take effect from November 7, following an order issued by the state health department on October 24.

According to the order, the Commissioner of Food Safety in West Bengal, operating under Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, holds the authority to prohibit the manufacture, storage, distribution, or sale of any food item within the state if it poses a risk to public health. This latest extension is intended to curb the consumption of harmful substances associated with gutkha and pan masala products, which have been linked to various health risks.

West Bengal has enforced this ban as part of its ongoing public health measures, aligning with efforts across India to reduce tobacco-related health issues. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring compliance closely and will impose penalties for any violations.
