Kolkatta: West Bengal's Industry and Information Technology Minister Partha Chatterjee said on Thursday that the state is actively drafting a policy to stimulate innovation. According to the Minister, the state is gradually becoming home to a number of unicorns (private entities valued at USD 1 billion or above).

During a virtual address at the ABP Infocom, he remarked, "The government is currently considering coming out with a programme to boost innovation." According to the minister, the administration has already published a data centre programme aimed at making the state a data hub.

Any deal involving data centres will be examined for tax breaks such as stamp duty exemptions, registration fees, and electricity charges, he said.

West Bengal's Information Technology sector provides 10 percent of the state's GDP and employs over two lakh professionals, the minister added. He went on to say that the state has pledged its full support for Reliance Jio's plans to build a submarine cable landing station, which would boost internet speeds.
