NEW DELHI: Ministry of Home Affairs in the Parliament on Tuesday informed that the Central Government has received a proposal from the Government of West Bengal for renaming the State as "Bangla" in all 3 languages viz. Bengali, English and Hindi.

Nityanand Rai, a minister of state in MHA, stated in a written response to the Lok Sabha that MHA has granted "No Objection Certificates (NOC)" to all of the applications for renaming cities that have been submitted over the past five years.

"He informed the Parliament that the West Bengal government has submitted a proposal to rename the state "Bangla in all three languages, i.e. Bengali, English, and Hindi." Saida Ahmad, an MP for the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), has inquired about the specifics and quantity of proposals the Ministry of Home Affairs has received for approval to rename cities throughout the nation, and whether the government has updated the rules for renaming historic sites.

Rai retorted that MHA does not have such rules for renaming historic sites. The name "Rajahmundry" of the city in Andhra Pradesh was changed to "Rajamahendravaram" in 2017.

Shri Banshidhar Nagar is the new name of the Jharkhand town formerly known as "Nagar Untari." The name of the Madhya Pradesh Nagar Panchayat town formerly known as "Birsinghpur Pali" was changed to "Maa Birasini Dham" that same year. The name of the city of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh was changed to Prayagraj that same year. Madhya Pradesh's Hoshangabad Nagar and Bai city names were changed to Narmadapuram and Bai, respectively, in the year 2021 "In Makhan Nagar.
