Nairobi: At least 51 people were killed when a truck struck several other vehicles and market vendors in western Kenya, according to police.
The accident happened on Friday night at a spot known for car accidents close to the Rift Valley town of Londiani, which is about 200 kilometres northwest of Nairobi, the country's capital.

Rift Valley police commander Tom Odera said that although 51 bodies were counted by officers at the scene, more were likely trapped in the debris.

The Kenya Red Cross Society requested blood donations from Kenyans after announcing on Saturday that 32 people were hurt and in hospitals. Additionally, it stated that rescue efforts had been hampered by heavy rain and that people were still trapped in smashed-up cars.

On Saturday morning, after visiting the scene, Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the government would move markets away from highways to avoid similar mishaps in the future.

In a tweet to the families of the deceased, President William Ruto called the accident "distressing" and urged drivers to be "extra cautious."

The truck veered off a major highway, striking several cars before striking pedestrians and vendors, according to witnesses who were quoted by local media. Witnesses posted pictures of the completely disfigured vehicle wreckage.

The police had stated on Friday that rescue efforts would go into the night. According to the Kenyan Red Cross Society, they have established stations at hospitals where people can report loved ones who are still missing and are offering psychological support to those who are impacted.
