Moscow: On Wednesday, the Kremlin warned that the security guarantees the West is considering for Ukraine would be a grave error that would compromise Russia's security and put Europe at greater risk for years to come.

An international framework that would enable long-term security assurances for Ukraine to strengthen its defences against Russia and thwart future aggression is anticipated to be announced by the G7 countries on Wednesday, according to officials.

One of the main reasons Moscow claims it launched its "special military operation" in Ukraine last year was to strengthen its own security in the face of what it portrays as an ever-expanding NATO and an antagonistic militarised Ukraine.

The proposed security guarantees for Kyiv, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, were a mistake that Moscow would have to account for in its future decision-making.

We believe this action to be gravely misguided and extremely risky," Peskov told the press.

"Because by offering Ukraine any kind of security guarantees, these nations would be violating the international consensus on the interdependence of security. They would compromise the security of the Russian Federation by giving guarantees to Ukraine, he said.

Peskov continued by saying he hoped Western politicians would recognise the dangers involved in giving Ukraine such assurances and that Russia could not tolerate anything that endangered its own security.

An action like that "is fraught with highly negative consequences in the medium, long and even short term," according to Peskov.
"By making this choice, these nations will significantly increase the level of danger in Europe for a very long time. They will undoubtedly harm us, which is something we will consider and bear in mind going forward.
