Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made an important statement on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, in which he spoke on the case of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik. Zakir Naik is currently in Malaysia, and the Malaysian Prime Minister has indicated that if India presents evidence in this case, then his government may consider a request to extradite Zakir Naik to India.

Zakir Naik case

Zakir Naik is facing charges in India for alleged money laundering and spreading extremism through hate speeches. He left India in 2016 and moved to Malaysia, where he was granted permanent residency by the government of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad. The Indian government is seeking the extradition of Zakir Naik.

Malaysia's stance

Anwar Ibrahim said that the Indian side did not raise this issue during a session on Tuesday. He also clarified that the case of Zakir Naik is not a personal one but a broader issue. The Malaysian Prime Minister said that his government is against terrorism and extremism, and they are working closely with India. But he also said that this one issue should not create any hindrance in bilateral relations.

India's hopes

India has claimed to have gathered evidence in the case of Zakir Naik and says that Zakir Naik is a threat to India's security. The Malaysian government has made it clear that they will consider the evidence and if any concrete request is received from India, action will be taken on it.

Bilateral Relations

Anwar Ibrahim said that there should not be any problem in the relations between India and Malaysia. He said that bilateral relations should not be affected due to the case of Zakir Naik. The Malaysian government also reiterated its commitment to work with India against terrorism and extremism.
