New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed the Animal Welfare Board of India to file an affidavit on the status of animals of closed circuses. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and Jasmeet Singh, While hearing a petition filed by PETA (advocates of moral treatment of animals), India gave a three-week time to the AWBI to file an affidavit.

PETA advocate Aman Hingorani said that the affidavit already filed by AWBI does not specifically indicate the condition of such animals. In its August 10 order, the court said, "Advocate Rajesh Kumar Gongna, appearing for defendant number three (AWBI), will have to ensure that another affidavit is filed within three weeks indicating the status of such animals.'’

Last year, the Court was informed by the Animal Protection Organisation Association of India that as per a report filed by AWBI, about 740 circus animals were registered with it, but only 28 were found in a survey. The court had then ordered the AWBI and the Central Zoo Authority to find out what happened to the missing animals. The court had asked for an affidavit on the status of all the circus animals registered.
