Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh attacked PM Modi and the BJP for connecting former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi with the riots saying what if someone links PM with  2002  riots in Gujarat's Godhra.

Amarinder told PTI, "It is wrong of Modi to connect (former prime minister) Rajiv Gandhi with the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. What if someone starts linking Modi with Godhra.”

BJP on Friday tweeted a video of Rajiv Gandhi's speech where the former PM can be heard giving his infamous speech, "when a big tree falls, the earth shakes" - an apparent reference to the anti-Sikh riots that broke out following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

Singh also, expressed shock over Rahul Gandhi's close aide Sam Pitroda's "hua toh hua comments. "If some leaders were involved in the riots, they should be punished as per law.”

Punjab chief minister Amarinder asserted that it was wrong of PM Modi to connect Rajiv Gandhi with the riots just because some individuals were involved. He said, "By the same yardstick, Modi should also have been implicated in the Godhra attack.”

 Earlier, PM Modi alleged that Rajiv Gandhi and his wife Sonia had used the warship as a "personal taxi" during a 10-day holiday to Lakshadweep Islands. The PM alleged that INS Viraat was "diverted to take the Gandhi family which was out for a vacation".
