What is digital rape?

When the term digital rape is heard for the first time, some people may think that it will be related to the Internet or online crime. But it is not so. Digital rape means when the accused sexually abuses the victim with his fingers or toes. This crime was added to the law in 2013 after the Nirbhaya case. According to this law, trying to forcefully have physical relations with hands or toes is considered a sexual crime and is punished severely under Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.

A similar case happened in 2019

Earlier, on 21 January 2019, another case of digital rape came to light in Noida. The accused in this case was Akbar Ali, who was 65 years old. He was a resident of West Bengal and had come to meet his daughter in Noida. During that time, he called a 3-year-old innocent girl living in his daughter's neighborhood on the pretext of giving her a toffee and digitally raped her. In this case, the court had given a severe punishment to the culprit, which makes it clear how seriously this crime is taken.

What is the punishment for digital rape?

In cases of digital rape, the law is very strict. In a 2019 case, the Gautam Budh Nagar District Court sentenced the culprit to life imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000. Since most of the victims in such crimes are girls, the accused is prosecuted under the POCSO Act. The punishment in this act can range from 20 years to life imprisonment, and if the victim dies, the accused can also be sentenced to death.
