With Bengaluru reporting 400 to 500 coronavirus cases per day, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now mandated triaging of all Covid-19 cases, with full clinical assessment. Triage of patients involves scanning for signs of serious illness or injury and helps in assessing the severity of their condition. As per the expert committee of the BBMP, early physical triage will help in reducing mortality. In order to facilitate early triage, physical triage centers at the assembly constituency level and mobile triage units (MTU) at PHC or ward level have been set up. Covid-19 positive patients, who are denying physical triage service of BBMP either at PTC or through MTU, are liable to action under the Disaster Management Act.

BBMP has advised labs and private hospitals to share Covid-19 test results with BBMP and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) first. The BBMP has directed all laboratories and private hospitals examining Covid-19 (either RAT/RT PCR or any other approved Covid tests), to update the results on the ICMR portal immediately, and inform the respective BBMP authorities via email. According to BBMP’s order, if any laboratories or hospitals are found to violate the above-mentioned order, the action shall be initiated under the Karnataka Epidemic Disease Ordinance, 2020, and Karnataka Private Medical Establishment (KPME) Act, 2017, and Disaster Management Act (DMA).

The BBMP’s direction comes as many labs and private hospitals have been informing Covid-19 test results to the patients immediately, even before informing BBMP authorities or updating on ICMR portal. Covid-19 has been declared a pandemic and it is mandatory for all private establishments managing to report all Covid-19 positive cases to BBMP to ensure timely and effective containment and surveillance.
