Shaheed Diwas, also known as Martyr’s Day, is celebrated every year on 23rd March. It is a day on which the freedom fighters of the country are remembered for the sacrifice they made to gain freedom from the British rule. This was the day on which three freedom fighters who fought against British rule in India Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar were hanged to death in Lahore jail.. They were caught and sentenced to death in case of J P Saunders murder and attacking the Central Legislative Assembly. Let us know more about Shaheed Diwas 2023 like its celebration, history, significance, etc from this article.

Six distinct dates have been designated as "martyr's day" or "shaheed diwas" in India to pay homage to the great patriots. 23rd March is the anniversary of the British Government's execution of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivram Rajguru. 21st October is Police Martyrs Day, commemorating the valour of the CRPF patrol ambushed by Chinese forces in 1959 at the Indo-Tibetan border in Ladakh. 17th November is the death anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai and 19th November is the birth anniversary of Rani Lakshmi- (former ruler of Jhansi). 30th of January, Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary, is nationally recognized as Martyr's Day.

Nathuram Godse's gunshots sparked the wild fire of Hindutva nationalism in India 74 years ago. Gandhiji was accused by Godse and his comrades of favouring the Muslim community during the partition and of being solely responsible for the atrocities committed during the partition.

However, in retrospect, Gandhiji's assassination can be viewed as the result of a systemic brainwashing, which focused on the creation of a majoritarian nation-state. A majoritarian state is diametrically opposed to a secularism envisioned by the Nation-Builders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr. B.R Ambedkar in view of embracing the country's diverse communities.

Read some inspirational patriotic quotes given by the freedom fighters of our country who gave their life for Swarajya.

The martyr cannot be dishonoured. Every lash inflicted is a tongue of fame; every prison a more illustrious abode.

It is easy to kill individuals, but you cannot kill ideas.

They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me. Then they will have my dead body, but not my obedience.

If yet your blood does not rage, then it is water that flows in your veins. For what is the flush of youth, if it is not of service to the motherland.
