The word yoga derives from the Sanskrit ‘yuj’, which means personal consciousness or union of soul with universal consciousness or spirit. Yoga is a ten thousand-year-old style of Indian knowledge. However, many people consider yoga only as a physical exercise, where people bend, twist, pull and adopt the difficult process of breathing.

These are really just the most superficial aspects of this profound science, revealing the infinite potential of the mind and soul of man, Yoga means much more than all of them. The full essence of lifestyle has been imbibed in yoga science. Yoga has been in circulation for more than ten thousand years. The earliest mention of contemplative tradition is found in the Rāgveda, the most ancient Indian literature in the Nasadīya Sukta. This brings us back to the Indus-Saraswati civilization. Exactly from the same civilization, the Pashupati seal (coin) on which a figure sits in a yoga posture is inscribed, which shows the prevalence of yoga in that ancient period.

However, in the oldest Upanishads, Brihadaranyaka, there is mention of various physical exercises that have become part of yoga. In the Chhandogya Upanishad, the practice of pranayama is mentioned in a mantra of Brihadaranyaka. Regarding the current form of "yoga", as mentioned, the first mention probably comes in the Kathopanishad, the first of the last eight sections of the Yajurveda's Kathashaka which is a main and important Upanishad. Yoga is seen here as a process of traveling inside or developing consciousness.
