“Stomach cramps” is a general term that refers to sharp, intermittent contractions or feelings of pain or discomfort that occurs anywhere in the abdomen between the lower chest and the pelvis or groin. Most people will experience stomach cramps at some point during their lifetime, and they can occur in any age group or population.

  • Firstly identify if you have gas. This is the main cause for stomach pain. You feel bloated, you belch continuously and burp. Gas causes abdominal cramps and a tightness or knotted feeling.
  • Using a hot bag/pack can help curb stomach cramps. Heat helps to loosen and relax muscles, so if you find yourself cramping up, some warmth can go a long ways for relieving you of the dreadful discomfort.
  • Certain foods are Lactose Intolerant like milk and milk products. Try to avoid these when you have stomach cramps or if you are lactose intolerant.
  • Lemon water is very effective for stomach cramps. The high acidity level stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid, which breaks down our food. It helps in indigestion.
  • Try consuming flax seeds for stomach cramps. This is a herbal remedy which has soluble fiber which helps with constipation.
  • Chew on some fennel seeds as they contain anethole, a volatile oil that can stimulate the secretion of digestive juices to help move things along. It can also help tame inflammation, and reduce the pain caused by it.
  • Rice water or kanji acts a demulcent, a substance that relieves inflammation by forming a sort of soothing barrier over a membrane (the lining of your stomach)
