Researchers from Citizens Lab found a vulnerability in WhatsApp for iOS and Android that allows installing a spyware virus on a smartphone. To do this, just call the person, and he does not even have to answer. Malicious software can turn on the camera and microphone of the device, as well as collect letters, SMS messages, and location data.

A spyware program called Pegasus was developed by the Israeli company NSO Group, which specializes in cybersecurity. According to her, the virus helps law enforcement agencies to fight terrorism and crime. However, it was used more than once with malicious intent - in particular, to spy on dissidents and journalists.

WhatsApp is not yet known how many people suffered from vulnerability. The developers have already fixed it and advise you to update the application as soon as possible.

In January, a serious vulnerability was discovered in the popular file manager ES File Explorer. Because of it, the attacker could download almost anything from the phone.
