Whatsapp said it had banned 17,59,000 Whatsapp accounts in India in November in compliance with the IT Rules 2021. Whatsapp received 602 complaints from the country in November and acted on 36 of them. A Whatsapp spokesperson said, "As per the IT Rules, 2021, we have published our sixth monthly report for the month of November. This user security report includes details of user complaints and related actions taken by Whatsapp as well as WhatsApp's own preventive actions."

The spokesperson said that "as recorded in the new monthly report, Whatsapp has banned more than 1.75 million accounts in the month of November. In October, Whatsapp banned more than 2 million accounts in India. India has more than 400 million consumers of Whatsapp." The company said, "Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state-of-the-art technology, data scientists and experts and processes to protect our users on our platform."

Meta, on the other hand, has said that during November, more than 16.2 million content pieces in 13 violence categories actively in India were "processed" on Facebook. Photo sharing platform Instagram took action against more than 3.2 million content pieces in 12 consecutive categories between the same period.

The new IT rules- Which came into force in May last year- require large digital platforms (with more than 5 million users) to publish compliance reports every month, containing details of complaints received and action taken. Whatsapp has said that "we will continue to bring more transparency in our work and may include more information about our efforts in future reports."
