USA: WhatsApp has released a new privacy-focused feature called Chat Lock, which hides your most private conversations behind an extra layer of security.
When you enable the feature for a specific chat thread, it will be moved from the regular onscreen inbox to a new folder that is only accessible via password/biometrics.
The feature is now available for both Android and iOS.

You can now use biometric authentication to protect your WhatsApp account. However, if someone has your unlocked phone and is connected to WhatsApp, they may be able to view messages from your special chat thread. However, the new feature allows users to keep their private conversations more secure by making them only accessible with their fingerprint, Face ID, or passcode.

The Chat Lock feature makes it nearly impossible for anyone other than the user to open the chat. Locking a chat thread removes it from the inbox and places it behind a folder that only the owner's password/biometrics can access. It turns off the author and message previews in notifications. Furthermore, media shared in locked chats is not automatically saved to the gallery.

To enable Chat Lock for a chat thread, perform the following steps: Navigate to a specific user's chat and click on their name to view their account details. Scroll down and tap on the Chat Lock option, which appears immediately after the Disappearing Messages option. To lock the conversation thread, enable the "Lock this chat" toggle and confirm with your fingerprint/password/Face ID.

This Chat Lock feature improves the security of private conversations while also encouraging data privacy. Meta intends to add more Chat Lock options, including companion device locking, over the next few months. Users will also be able to create a custom password for the chats, which can be different from the one they use for their smartphone on a daily basis.

The ability to lock chats is now available to Android and iOS users worldwide. It is visible in the most recent WhatsApp update, which is available on the Google Play Store and the App Store.
