USA: The most widely used instant messaging service in the world, WhatsApp, has unveiled a new messaging feature. It is a broadcast-based service called "Channels." Channels are designed for one-to-many conversations, as opposed to the typical interpersonal conversations on WhatsApp. The company claims that Channels will be the "most private broadcasting service available," according to a blog post.

Channels on WhatsApp are a one-way broadcasting tool. Channel administrators will have the ability to send texts, images, videos, stickers, and polls. Users won't be able to respond to those messages, though, because of the one-way nature of the system. For Channels, WhatsApp has added a new 'Updates' tab. The new tab will allow users to view messages from Channels and Status.

Utilising direct links sent through chats, emails, or online posts, users can join WhatsApp Channels. The business is also creating a "searchable directory" to locate various channels for interests, sporting organisations, local authorities, and more. Users will be able to look up their preferred Channel using the new directory. By selecting the "plus" symbol next to the Channel's name, users can join it.

According to WhatsApp, the Channel experience depends heavily on privacy. To begin with, channel administrators' profile pictures and phone numbers won't be made available to viewers. The phone numbers of followers won't be visible to admins either. And nobody will be able to see who they follow.Furthermore, the app will only keep track of 30 days of Channel history. The ability for administrators to prohibit screenshots and  forwards too.

Conversely, WhatsApp Channels are not end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp stated that the purpose of the Channels is to reach a large audience. The company is looking into the possibility of eventually encrypting end-to-end some Channels, such as those used by NGOs or health organisations. Additionally, it will include a choice allowing admins to control who can follow their Channel and whether it should be publicly discoverable.

WhatsApp intends to make money off of Channels. The business is looking into the possibility of offering payment services to businesses in Channels. In the future, companies will be able to advertise their Channels in the directory.

WhatsApp Channels has a modest beginning. The feature is being introduced by the company in Singapore and Columbia. Select organisations and well-known voices from both nations are on board.
