WhatsApp Working on Email-based Account Protection Feature

Washington: In a bid to enhance user security, WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a novel email-based account protection feature for its Android beta users.

This upcoming feature aims to fortify account verification by allowing users to associate their email addresses with their WhatsApp accounts, supplementing the existing phone number-based verification. This additional layer of security seeks to provide users with a safeguard against potential breaches and unauthorized access.

Although the feature is still in the developmental phase and hasn't been rolled out to all Android beta users, screenshots of the feature in action have been shared by WABetaInfo, a reputable source for tracking WhatsApp updates.

The previewed screenshots illustrate a straightforward process for users to integrate their email addresses into their WhatsApp accounts. By navigating to Settings > Account > Email, users can seamlessly associate their email addresses with their accounts. This integration will grant them the capability to employ their email addresses for account verification in case they lose access to their phone numbers.

The proposed email-based account protection feature stands as a valuable enhancement to WhatsApp's security arsenal. In a landscape where phone numbers can sometimes become compromised, this feature offers a resilient line of defense against potential hacking attempts.

In tandem with the upcoming email-based protection feature, WhatsApp is actively working on a suite of other security enhancements:

  • Two-Step Verification: This feature mandates users to input a code from their linked email address or an alternative device during WhatsApp logins, providing an added layer of authentication.
  • App Lock: WhatsApp is developing an app lock mechanism that empowers users to secure their WhatsApp application with a PIN or fingerprint, augmenting overall privacy.
  • Message Encryption: All messages exchanged on WhatsApp are endowed with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only the sender and designated recipient can access the content.

With this comprehensive array of security measures, WhatsApp positions itself as one of the most robust messaging platforms in terms of user protection. The impending inclusion of the email-based account protection feature is poised to fortify this position even further.
