Guru Tegh Bahadur, popularly known as 'Hind Ki Chadar' in India, laid down his life on this day in 1675 while defending religion. Guru Tegh Bahadur was the ninth Guru of Sikhs and sacrificed his life for those who did not even belong to his community. In 1675, the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb killed the Ninth Sikh cleric Tegh Bahadur Ji at Chandni Chowk in Delhi. Noel King of the University of California, who has done several kinds of research on Guru Tegh Bahadur, refers to the incident and says that 'the murder of Guru Tegh Bahadur was the first martyrdom to protect human rights in the world.'

Aurangzeb's rule in Indian history has been a very brutal regime. Many stories of Aurangzeb's brutality are discovered in history books. Aurangzeb also wanted to make India an Islamic nation and tortured Hindus in many ways. Fed up with the atrocities of the Mughals, a team led by Pandit Kripa Ram rushed to Anandpur Sahib to seek help from Guru Tegh Bahadur. Guruji immediately agreed to help them. Guruji asked him to convey the message to Aurangzeb that if Guru Tegh Bahadur converts to Islam, all of them will become Muslims along with him. This was done after the Guru's order.

Guru Tegh Bahadur then challenged Aurangzeb to die but would not convert to Islam. Angry, the brutal ruler Aurangzeb arrested Guru Tegh Bahadur along with supporters and inflicted severe physical torture for five days. But Guru Tegh Bahadur refused to convert to Islam. Aurangzeb's brutality can be gauged from the fact that his supporters were set on fire alive in front of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Yet he could not bow down Guru Tegh Bahadur. On November 11, 1675, the Qazi read the fatwa at Chandni Chowk in Delhi and the executioner severed the head of Guru Sahib with a sword. But Guru Tegh Bahadur did not even let out a sigh from his mouth and laughingly sacrificed himself for the protection of religion. Many salutes to such a sage and religion protector guru on his sacrifice day.
