Everyone is well aware of the fact that Dussehra or Vijayadashami festival is one of the special festivals of Hindu religion. The whole country celebrates this festival with great enthusiasm. This is the festival of victory of Shri Rama over Ravana and justice over injustice.
When is Dussehra celebrated?
This festival belongs to Lord Rama and Ravana. A total of two Navratri falls in a year. The first Navaratri falls in the month of Chaitra and the second Navaratri falls in the month of Ashwin. As such, both Navratri have special significance. However, Navratri of Ashwin month is celebrated with great pomp and show. The second day that comes after the conclusion of Navratri of Ashwin month is celebrated as Dussehra or Vijayadashami. You can understand this in such a way that Dashami date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month is celebrated as Dussehra.
History of Dussehra festival
The history of Dussehra festival is very old in India. For centuries, this festival has been seen in Indian culture. Talking about its beginning, this festival had started with the slaughter of Ravana. When Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Lakshman ji were on exile, Ravana was deceived by Ravana at that time. Ravana took Mata to Lanka and Ravana kept Mata in Lanka. Sri Ram and Lakshman reached Lanka in search of Mother. Sri Rama destroyed entire Lanka with the help of Vibhishan, brother of Hanuman, Lakshmana, Sugriva, Ravana. While Hanuman burnt Lanka to ashes with the help of his tail. During the battle of Lord Rama and Ravana, Ravana was defeated by Sri Rama and Shri Rama killed Ravana. Henceforth, this day began to be celebrated as Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
