New Delhi: When the father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India from South Africa, he started his efforts for independence. He started this campaign with a movement in Champaran, Bihar. After the Champaran movement, Gandhi once again reached Bhagalpur in Bihar. Coming here, he prepared the people for the freedom struggle.

It is noteworthy that Bhagalpur was greatly affected by the earthquake in Bihar in the year 1934. At the same time relief work was going on for the victims by the Congress. Due to this, Mahatma Gandhi also came to Bhagalpur via Saharsa. At the same time, while addressing the people at Lajpat Park in Bhagalpur, he appealed to assist the earthquake victims by assisting in relief work. During that time, during the gathering at Lajpat Park, volunteers also took donations from the people. At the same time, there were many such people who wanted to take Gandhiji's autograph, in view of this, Gandhi sold his autograph to the people for 5 rupees.

The money received by giving autographs was given by Bapu to assist the earthquake victims. Also an interesting thing is told that Gandhi stayed in Deep Narayan Singh's house in Bhagalpur. The building in which he was staying was later made the residence of the District Judge with the wish of Deep Narayan Singh. This building is still famous in Bihar for its unique design.
