This was at a time when famous litterateur Munshi Premchand worked as a teacher in Gorakhpur. He had kept a cow herd there. One day Munshi took his cow to a garden for grazing built in the residence of the British officer, which angered the British officer and he took out his gun to kill the cow.

When  Munshi Premchand also reached there looking for his cow. The Englishman said to Premchand, 'You will not longer get this cow back, how dare you get the courage that you rammed your cow into my garden. You black people will not understand such a thing, we rule this country, I will shoot this cow. Munshi Premchand pleaded and tried to explain to the British officer, but he refused and agreed to shoot at the cow.

When Munshi Premchand saw that the British would not believe it, he himself stood before the cow and shouted, "If you want to shoot, shoot me first." Seeing Munshi Premchand standing in front of his gun, the British officer was terrified and quietly took his gun and went inside and Premchand returned with his cow.
