NEW DELHI: On this day in 1975, in the scorching heat, the then PM Indira Gandhi-led government decided to impose a state of emergency in the country after a judgement of the Allahabad High Court and the day of June 25 was recorded in the pages of history. Today, the country is remembering the Emergency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted recalling the time.

But the memory of the Emergency seems incomplete without a picture of the country's former defence minister and the chained portrait of the late socialist leader George Fernandes. Though George Fernandes, the arch-in-chief of the political union leader who started his political career, may have passed away, his shackles of an emergency after independence are still fresh in the minds of the people.

Whenever there is a mention of the brutal phase of the Emergency, the picture of "Bagi" leader George Fernandez, symbolic of the opposition to the repression, will also be mentioned. This is probably the reason why charismatic leader George is known as the leader of the rebel attitude. After the death of George Saheb, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has announced that his handcuffed Murti government will be set up.
