WILMINGTON: According to administration sources, U.S President Joe Biden's administration has secured commitments from 20 internet providers, including Verizon, Comcast, and AT&T, to reduce rates or enhance internet speeds for millions of Americans. On Monday, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will announce the agreements at a ceremony with executives from internet service providers.
The agreements are part of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a component of the infrastructure bill passed last year with bipartisan support. According to the White House, it can save qualified American families up to USD30 per year on their internet costs. It is estimated that tens of millions of families qualifying for the ACP will receive free internet connection as a result of the increased promises.
The programme is available to low-income families. A household is also eligible if it receives government assistance through other programmes such as food stamps or Medicaid low-income health insurance. The corporations made the commitments willingly, according to a senior administration official on a conference call with reporters.
