USA: In response to Washington's claim that the pathogen "likely" leaked from a Chinese laboratory, the World Health Organization (WHO) has urged the US and every other country to reveal their intelligence on the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO has also warned against unfounded speculation and "politicisation" of the matter.

In a lengthy statement to the media on Friday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus referred to the need to pinpoint the exact origins of the global health crisis as both a "scientific" and "moral imperative".

"If any country has information about the origin of the pandemic, it is essential to share that information with the WHO and the international scientific community," he said, adding that a few weeks before he spoke with Chinese officials on the subject .

FBI Director Christopher Wray claimed the virus "most likely" escaped from a Chinese lab in comments to Fox earlier this week, citing a bureau assessment that has not been made public.

The WHO's COVID-19 technical lead, an infectious disease epidemiologist named Maria Van Kerkhove, said that the WHO had contacted the US Embassy in Switzerland for more information on the origin of COVID.

That information should be shared, she said, noting that the US has not yet provided access to its data.

Tedros issued a warning against the "continued politicization of origin research", claiming that the issue has become a "geopolitical football" as a result of disputes between competing countries, which makes it more challenging to pinpoint origins.
