It is mentioned in the Shiv Purana that once a dispute arose between Shiva and Brahma as to who were the best among the two? In such a situation, both started to prove themselves superior. Only then a vast Jyotirmaya Linga appears to both of them. After this, Brahma and Vishnu decided that whoever finds its end will be the best.

Both Brahma ji and Vishnu ji began to explore the ends of the Jyotirmaya Linga in the opposite direction. Vishnu returned after losing it and Brahma, taking recourse to untruth, said that he should be able to locate the end and he called Ketaki flower as a witness in it. Shiva appeared on hearing the false words of Brahma and started criticizing Brahma. Both Vishnu and Brahma Ji started praising Shiva with folded hands. Mahadev told both gods that I am the cause, originator and master of this world. Also, Shiva also said that I am also the creator of both of you.
