India has hit the milestone of administering 100 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines today, October 21. The total vaccine doses administered in the country crossed 100 crore on October 21. Praising India, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of World Health Organization  (WHO) South-East Asia, on Thursday congratulated India for administering one billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in the country.

In a tweet, Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said in a video address, "Huge congratulations to India for marking yet another milestone, a billion COVID-19 vaccine doses administered."

Earlier, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated for achieving this landmark.

It was on January 16, 2021 that India's COVID-19 vaccination drive was started. Initially, the vaccination was opened for Health Care Workers only. From February 2, front line workers were made entitled for vaccination. These included state and Central Police personnel, Armed Force Personnel, Home Guards, Civil Defence and Disaster Management Volunteers, Municipal workers, Prison Staff, PRI Staff and Revenue workers involved in containment and surveillance, Railway Protection Force and election Staff.
