Chennai: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other jawans were killed in a helicopter accident in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on December 8. Group Captain Varun Singh was the only survivor left in the accident, who was admitted to the Military Hospital in Wellington with injuries. After which he was taken to the Command Hospital in Bengaluru where he was placed on a life support system after fighting the battle of life and death for nearly 7 days.

The Indian Air Force has reported that Indian Air Force Group Captain Varun Singh, who was injured in the helicopter crash, was a directing staff at the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington (Nilgiri Hills). Tell us that Varun Singh has also been awarded the Shaurya Chakra to save his LCA Tejas fighter jet during an air emergency in 2020. He was conferred with the honour by the President on this year's Independence Day.  Varun Singh was a resident of Khorma Kanhauli village in Rudrapur tehsil of Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh. His entire family lives in Tamil Nadu as he is posted in DSSC.

The Indian Air Force had reported after the accident that CDS Rawat was on his way to DSSC wellington (Nilgiri Hills) on Wednesday to address the faculty and students of the staff course. Meanwhile, in the afternoon, an Air Force Mi17 V5 helicopter met with an accident near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, involving a 4-member team carrying CDS and 9 other passengers. There are no survivors left in this tragic accident. The country lost 14 patriots in this biggest and most tragic tragedy in Indian military history.
