New Delhi: In the country's capital Delhi, many liquor shops have had to be closed due to business not running properly and the new excise policy system. Around 200 liquor shops have been closed. Most of the shops are being closed due to financial loss due to non-operation of business. The Delhi government had issued licenses to a total of 849 liquor shops under its Excise Policy 2021-22 last year. But till the end of May this year, only 639 shops have been found open. According to the new list of retail liquor shops shared by the Excise Department on its website, this number has come down to 464 in June.

Excise policy 2021-22 ended on May 31, was extended by the Excise Department of Delhi Government for two months. Liquor traders claim that many license holders did not opt for expansion and closed the shops. Because they were already paying more license fees. A liquor merchant said that there were many reasons for closing the shop. Such as opening of liquor shops in non-confirming wards, heavy discounts on liquor have increased competition in the market and due to the introduction of new brands, steps have to be taken to close the shop.

Explain that under the existing excise policy, each licensee was to open three shops in each municipal ward. However, out of 272 municipal wards, 100 were non-conforming where shops could not open due to actions of municipal bodies against violation of Delhi Master Plan rules, officials said.
