With the battle for the survival of his government following the resignation of 16 Congress-JD(S) MLAs, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Thursday wanted to know why he should step down. Kumaraswamy told reporters here, "Why should I resign? What is the need for me to resign now?" he said, "In 2009-10, 18 BJP MLAs, including some Ministers, had "resisted" the then Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, but he did not resign.

The chief minister held discussions with senior Congress leaders on Thursday, a fresh setback to his leadership coalition government with two more Congress MLAs resigning on Wednesday, if the resignation is accepted, the Congress-JD (Secular) alliance. There is a risk of losing its majority in the Assembly as it has 116 existing strength in the 224-member House. Congress MLAs MTB Nagaraj and K. Sudhakar on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar in his chamber at the Legislative Assembly of the state secretariat.

The Karnataka unit of the BJP, led by its chief Yeddyurappa, staged a protest in The Legislative Assembly on Wednesday demanding Kumaraswamy's resignation, claiming that he lost his majority in the House. Yeddyurappa and other BJP leaders had also petitioned the Governor in this regard. Of the 16 MLAs who resigned, 13 belong to the Congress and three from the JD(S).
